*Shown above – plaster column, archways and cornice, designed by Halcyon`s plasterers in Glasgow and fitted to conceal steel work.
Although intrinsically appealing, plasterwork has wholly practical origins. Stucco decoration, unlike wall hangings, did not retain the smell of food or drink. Central rose bore the brunt of smoke damage from chandeliers and were easier to repair than a complete ceiling.
Today, added value and aesthetic appeal are the principal motives in restoration works. Cornice design motifs such as the typically rococo shells, vines and fruit are refashioned based on surviving sections or from original drawings.
Existing plasterwork can be echoed in customised designs created by Halcyon’s sculptors who are based in Glasgow. Similarly, corbels, plates and panel mouldings can be remodelled to requisite pattern and dimensions. When budgets are restricted, you can sift through a catalogue of off-the-shelf reproduction cornices, plaques, roses, dado rails and fire surrounds, the latter finished in a sandstone texture from an extensive colour palette. Alternatively, they can be supplied as a base product allowing surface effect to be added at the customer’s discretion.
